A weekend trip to the Peak District has to include a visit to the Magpie Mine. I first came across this mine many years ago on a walk. It appear in the mist as a spooky apparition that has lived with me ever since. The Peak District is one of my favourite places to stay.
The mine is just outside of the village of Sheldon in the White Peaks (limestone) and was a former lead mine and date back to before 1739. The beauty is you can walk freely around the site and take pictures which I have done on many occasions. The site also has some unique wildflowers (protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act and are worth a picture or two in their own right.
